Likely, the American South is difficult for us Northerners, and there is a Philadelphia accent that  befuddles many Philadelphians! “Meetcha at d’iggle” is “Meet you at the Eagle.” And we pronounce it Fluffaduffya! And we don’t even go “down pit” but we do go for “beer n’pizza”!
Why can’t the Americans/English learn to speak?

I mean, it can take up to a half four for me to get through 15 minutes of dialogue in Sam, once to hear it, then again to go back to pick up specific words. Hey, I have to do the same thing with Ulysses, so I hardly mind. Fortunately, I’m retired.....

How many among you have any difficulty understanding the Liverpool/Manchester/Yorkshire accents used in such programs as Sam and The Onedin Line (even knowing that many of these performers do NOT use region-appropriate accents, like Edwin Ashton or Captain Baines. Pretty much all the characters in Sam seem to be speaking “the correct way,” although some of them are native Welsh (like Ray Smith).

  

As I know the others in this group only from e-mails, I don’t know where in England you live or how you “sound.” This is all a real education for me, so I’d appreciate a little insight. The old saw about parts of countries (Italy, Germany, USA) not being able to comprehend each other (because they were never cogent countries to begin with) applies.
