Dear Mr. Morgan:
I understand that you may have some influence in matters of rights/licensing on such services as Talking Pictures TV.
There are many people in your apparent demographic who are keen to see fresh transmissions of the work of writer John Finch, the showrunner of A Family at War and a critical contributor to the fantastically popular Coronation Street. There are so many fans of this writer’s dramatically compelling work who would love to see fresh transmissions of his other series, such as Sam (all 39 episodes written exclusively by him at Granada’s insistence) and the Spoils of War, to name only two.
This writer’s work is human, relatable, and (being a television professional) dramatically compelling from one episode to the next. He hooks his audience through very careful plotting (although nothing so blatant as what one sees in current offerings): you want to know what happens to the people, not some aggravated action. His people are the key, as all the finest dramatists knew.
His dramas are infinitely abetted by some of the finest British stage and film performers absolutely on par with the 1969 Forsyte Saga: Ray Smith, Michael Goodliffe, Maggie Jones, Tom Conti, John Price, and all the wonderful supporting players made over a lifetime of rich character work. These performers absolutely rivet the viewer’s attention because they play people fighting for their impoverished lives in a Yorkshire mining village.
Politics, broken families, broken dreams, desire for hope, death and destruction—who needs another re-run of Dallas or a Dickens adaptation (fine and fun as they are).
I’m just one of many who would sincerely welcome any consideration you could give. There are many you could contact, such as Michael Cox, the original producer; Mr. Finch or his son Steven, and others. Burke’s Law is retro-fun but honest drama such as Sam and Spoils of War stay in the mind and, I’m certain, would increase demand for other ITV treasures.
Always remember, there are viewers and purchasers over the age of 30.
