I would strongly recommend Boy's from the Black Stuff , and GBH, two series written by Alan Bleasedale My Dad was in the latter ,as it happens ,
and was also in when the Boat Comes In, which others have recommended -as would I .
Our Friends in the North, is a top drama ,in which you can also see the birth of four major stars, and the German series Das Boat (it was also released , in a shortened version as a cinema length film ,but I strongly suggest seeing the 4part (?) TV version, for the ultimate experience
.Great News that FAW is soon to be repeated ,from the start ,every weekday afternoon on Talking pictures TV to cater for all the new viewers that are now able to receive it ., but joined the current screening half way through !
regards to all and a happy new year to everyone !

Oops – I see that someone has already mentioned When the Boat Comes In.
Fortunes of War is very different. The first time I watched it (when it was broadcast on Masterpiece Theatre in the US), I hated both of the leading characters. They seemed selfish & oblivious in different ways. But I tried again a few years ago, and although I still thought the lead characters weren’t very attractive people, I did enjoy the series. And it evokes the period marvelously.

Definitely agree on Secret Army & Colditz.
I enjoyed Onedin Line (I watched all 8 series), but somehow I don’t put it on the same level as some of these others.
One series no one has mentioned yet is When the Boat Comes In. It’s set in an industrial town called Gallowshields, near Newcastle, just after WW I. I was very disappointed, when I visited Newcastle a few years ago, to find out that the town doesn’t really exist. But the series has something of the same feel as AFAW (mostly working class characters), and I think fans of AFAW would like it.

Hi Scott,
I used to love the Onedin Line, particularly the earlier series, Peter Gilmore and Anne Stallybrass were most definitely a match made in heaven.
Regards,
Liz.

My wife recently saw this and agrees with you completely!
At the risk of going off-topic, are there other series that AFAW fans recommend? Having gone through dozens of series, and having mentioned Forsyte Saga and Matador (and agreeing to the excellence of Jewel in the Crown, Brideshead, and To Serve Them), I add Wish Me Luck, Yes, [Prime] Minister (pace Monty Python), All Creatures Great and Small, Secret Army (and its brief follow-on), and Colditz. There are several Danish and Swedish series (e.g., Borgen) but let’s avoid the Continent (and such as Bergerac, Midsomer Murders, George Gently, etc.). Thank you all!
