Hi I'm Sue Armstrong and I started watching the series in 1970 at the age of eleven. I watched it with my parents who had both gone through WWII,Dad was16 in1939 and managed to forge his age and join the navy. Mum was ten and evacuated from Birmingham . Obviously it seemed quite recent to both of them, but it's only watching it now that I realize how it must have felt for them to watch it.
Dad had been torpedoed and sunk twice ,one of them being the Fiji at the battle of Crete and was in the water for a long time, losing many of his shipmates. When I recently watched the episode where Robert died I felt for my Dad,realizing his experiences were being played out on screen. He never said too much about the bad times, but I have learnt more since his death going through papers and photos. Since Mum died last year I have found out even more details which even Mum had forgotten about. Mum often talked to us about her war, being evacuated, working in a factory making metal casings for munitions and about rationing.
I love this series,so glad I came across it on Talking Pictures. I came across it last year around the time Mum died and I had a hip replacement and found it comforting somehow. The acting is good and, believable. Yes I had laugh at the microphone dropping into shot and a carpet moving on it's own ,live tv must have been difficult.
My favourite was Freda and I had a real crush on Philip.
Sue
