After Margaret and Michael apparently come to a meaningful understanding (second scene), and Margaret decides to be with Michael, there’s a fade to a new scene. Margaret is home with Edwin, having a cup of tea while Edwin listens to an upbeat song on the radio; there’s a cross-cut to Michael’s home with his daughter Barbara getting ready for school; Barbara asks her father if Mrs. Porter (Margaret) doesn’t like him anymore; “she doesn’t come here anymore, for weeks and weeks!” Obviously, a couple of months have passed. Michael decides to end the gambit by insisting she get ready to go to school (“Don’t forget your gas-mask!). These two scenes together take 45 seconds. The latter scene sets up the “pregnant” drama to come.
In the Acorn set, the second scene cuts to the dialogue between Jean and Margaret, where Jean comments that Margaret hasn’t gone to a concert in a while with Margaret.
Lesley Nunnerly and John McKelvey are particularly masterly in this hour.
