It seems extraordinary (but, hey, I’m not a technician) that a sum total of 6 minutes, if that, would need to be cut out of a 6-disc set (difference between British and Netherlands sets, as far as Series One goes). I now understand why only two episodes per disc could be embedded, but would, say, an average of 2 minutes per disc have to be eliminated to fit everything else on (the print-only extras—bios and such)?

Forgot to thank Scott and Richard for their thorough detailing of episodes and the omissions from the Acorn set.

Hello Arthur,
It seems the Acorn set was issued at the time before dual layer DVD discs were introduced. Two episodes would take up nearly all the 4.7GB capability of a DVD. If Acorn released the series completely unedited it would have ran to 26, not 22 discs.
This was one of the reasons why longer blockbuster films like, "Titanic" could only be released on a single disc when dual layer became standard.
For a longer running time with less discs it's obvious the Dutch set is on dual layer. This doesn't compress the picture quality at all and DVD players, at least the modern ones are compatible in playing these discs.
The Dutch set isn't perfect in chopping out the break bumpers and the latter part of the dual ending, (a few more seconds of theme and sandcastle after the AFAW caption with the slow fade up of the end Granada one).
These omissions won't bother everyone of course but personally I would love to see Network DVD release this completely unedited which they tend to do with their releases if supplied with the original unedited tapes or, more likely copies of them.
As a lover of older TV programmes in general I like to see them presented as they were originally made.
Cheers
Brian

I have not been reading the detailed posts about missing material (I want to avoid “spoilers,” even though I have watched the entire series), but it is surprising and disturbing to learn that the Acorn sets – which are the ones I have – are missing material that is in the Netherlands set. You would think it would be the other way around.
On Amazon, the Netherlands set says it runs for 2860 minutes, compared with the Acorn’s 2563 minutes. If those figures are accurate, that is a very substantial difference.
The Netherlands set compresses the episodes into 16 disks rather than 22. Have you found that to create any problems?
Thanks for your careful review of the two sets.
Arthur
