Just to ease your concerns, Tim, I did receive this post when you sent it on 30 November, so I presume that our other members did too.
Thanks, though, for reposting. It is very interesting to get these behind-the-scenes observations of A Family at War, especially from someone so closely related to the Ashton patriarch!

Yes John,
It must have been ! I still live in the flat ( overlooking Battersea Park ) though now it is very cluttered up with musical instruments and many Televisions** (and a lifetime of possessions I managed to hang on here by taking lodgers to cover the high service charges!
I'm sure he did cook you a meal ,as one of this main pleasures was cooking (along with sea fishing ,when he got the chance ) Shame I was not there (or I don't think I was there) as I would have loved to have met you
Thank you for being so complimentary about him and his acting -I find it hard to judge when I watch him, cause he sticks out from the rest of the cast -but at least I'm not embarrassed like I was as a grumpy teenager !
I am thoroughly enjoying watching the series on Talking Pictures (I'm so glad someone is now showing it after all this time ) and hopefully it will restore A Family at War to it's rightful position in TV history ,having been shamefully neglected by TV academics
.Thanks you John for creating and writing such a wonderful work ,
All the very best to you ,
Tim
**( Re TV's : I often watch two at the same time (though it is impossible to LISTEN to two at the same time -so one has subtitling !)

I. met John Mc Kelvey once when he came to visit my dad, for a cup of tea and a chat at our flat in Battersea This was some time after the series had finished, and I believe he and his wife,, Mareka (?) then lived in Australia and this was a rare visit back to Blighty I remember him as being a vey nice man and I too enjoy his impeccable performance in AFAW on Talking Pictures .
Incidentally I hope everyone knows that Talking Pictures will be broadcast on Standard Definition as well, from tomorrow afternoon ,so many more people will be able to see AFAW (but it may involve all of us having to retune our Freeview boxes etc ¬)
regards ,
Tim Douglas
Dear Tim, Would the flat in Battersea be one I visited on one of my very rare visits to London, and had a lovely trout lunch cooked for me by Colin, one of the best and most likeable actors I have had the privilege of working with in my 92 years?
John Finch.

Can anyone provide any information about this actor? His work on the series impresses me very much (rather like a latter-day Soames Forsyte). Such splendid consistency and detail! How was he to work with? Any notable performances elsewhere? That's the pleasure of seeing these series, finding what wonderful work has been accomplished. Thank you all.
